First impressions are meant to last and there isn't much better of a first impression, than the drive from Mariato to Arenas and Flores in the Veraguas Province. The road starts inland, climbs a few hills and decends towards the sea for breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Between Malena and Torio, passengers see beautiful valleys and grand ocean views as the road winds back and forth between mountains and the waterfront. This first part is only the beginning of a beautiful trek to the more southernly views. Going further south, the mountains climb higher and the pasturelands become bigger around the road. Impressive views of Isla Cebaco to the right and growing mountain ranges to your left create an explorer's attitude in each passenger. People will see grass and wood huts built along the lanscape with cattle moving effortlessly up and down the mountainsides to the pasturelands. Even further south as one gets past Morillo and Mata Oscuro, Cerro Hoya views come into sight and the southern Azuero really turns magical. The pasturelands get more flat, the mountains become taller and the oceanfront becomes more commanding.
Side roads can be taken to any number of beaches that open to an expansive blue dream while the other way the roads lead to mountain paths that allow any viewer to see many miles on a clear day. Secretive valleys are brought into sight the more south one drives. The mountains in the distance also offer what the heartland of Panama is all about - mystical wonders, natural flora and fauna, and of course great adventures to be had around each corner.
