There are many aspects of Panama to love - the commanding coastlines, the verdant mountains, the surf, the world class fishing, the hospitality; but one of the aspects of Panama that we love best is our neighbors and friends down here.
In our area, we may see our neighbors less but the times we do see them are worth the wait. We really enjoy those impromptu drop-bys and small get-togethers that turn into great social gatherings. Recently a local friendly couple we have been friends with for a few years stopped by to chat, give some updates and share some fresh food grown in their garden. This little drop-by turned into a great, exciting time with long conversations, a multi-hour, multi-course dinner and of course a time to share and spend quality time with our beloved neighbors.
This is just one example of what is so great about neighbors down here. People really look out for each other down here, along with offering great hospitality. With most people offering a wide assortment of knowledge and experience, it is quite helpful to share this information with others - some might be great handymen, or rather helpful with their green thumb. Tidbits about cooking techniques, local honeyholes for fresh fish, and of course the prime surf spots are all helpful to know about. Once these are established it is always a pleasure to share books that we have read, opinions on local happenings, regional happening and of course world affairs.
As, the Mariato region of Veraguas is at ground zero for action and adventure we are really looking forward to learning more about our current neighbors and learning about our new neighbors. Neighbors provide a communal spirit that is necessary to any fledgling community. The bonds between neighbors provide stability, support and most of all a country decadence. We enjoy the times when a 5 minute drop-by can turn into an impromptu evening fiesta full of food, fun, and friendly conversation.
Not only do we receive the surprise and fun that comes with local neighbors, international friends stop by and have fun as well. Friends that we have met over the years from myriad countries come to Panama to visit and vacation. It gives us great pleasure that they would come visit and we can share a bit of our lives with them as well. Not only do we get to show them the local spots, the beauty of our area, and the places and people that make this paradise for us, we get to re-experience some of these aspects again for the first time. This is something that gives us great pride, smiles and excitement. Their enjoyment becomes our enjoyment as the first time they see something, we experience it for the first time again as well.
Over this past holiday weekend, friends from California have visited and they believe this is paradise as well. Days filled with sun and fun have turned into relaxing evenings learning about our respective experiences and opinions. It helps when our guests have advanced degrees in oceanography and biology and can share vital information about our backyard neighbors and the bio-diversity that rivals many other key places in the world.
They will be leaving soon, but others will come and we will get to share a piece of our world with them as well. This is what builds strong relationships, a strong community and fulfills the lives of people down here. It is all about hospitality.
